Best Beach Towns to Retire in on a Budget

A comfortable coastal retirement on $1,200–$2,000 a month is still very achievable — if you choose the town for healthcare, visas and year-round life rather than for the postcard.

Retirement at the beach fails for predictable reasons: the hospital is three hours away, the visa needs renewing in person every ninety days, the town empties in October, or the house turns out to need a car for every loaf of bread. None of those show up in the listing photos. Get the four fundamentals right — healthcare, residency, walkability and season length — and almost any affordable coastline works.

The countries below combine formal retirement or long-stay visas with beach towns where a modest home costs less than a car in northern Europe. They are ordered roughly by how easy the paperwork is for a retiree with pension income.

Portugal, Spain and Greece — the easy-paperwork Mediterranean

Southern Europe remains the default for a reason: EU-standard hospitals, dependable water and power, walkable old towns, and residency routes for retirees with steady income. The Algarve and Costa Blanca are no longer cheap, but the Alentejo coast, inland-facing Greek villages, the Peloponnese and Italy's Calabria and Abruzzo still have village houses within walking distance of the sea in the $60,000–$140,000 range. Budget $1,600–$2,200 a month for a couple.

Mexico, Ecuador, Colombia, Costa Rica and Panama — the Americas

Mexico's residencia temporal and Panama's Pensionado are among the friendliest retirement visas anywhere, and both countries have private healthcare that costs a fraction of US rates. Ecuador is the value leader — the Santa Elena coast supports a couple on roughly $1,200 a month including private insurance — while Colombia's Caribbean and Mexico's Gulf and Pacific secondary towns offer more amenities for a little more money.

Thailand, Malaysia and the Philippines — Southeast Asia

Thailand's retirement visa (50+, with income or a deposit) and Malaysia's long-stay programme both open access to excellent, inexpensive private hospitals in Bangkok, Penang and Kuala Lumpur. The Philippines' SRRV is the simplest of the three and permits property structures many retirees find workable. Living costs of $1,000–$1,600 a month are normal outside the resort strips; healthcare quality in the regional cities is the main variable to research.

Retirement-specific checks most buyers skip

  • 🏥 Drive to the nearest full hospital. Time it yourself, at the worst hour of the day.
  • 🛂 Confirm the visa you qualify for today — income thresholds change often.
  • 🚶 Can you live without driving? This matters more at 80 than at 60.
  • 🏚️ Single storey or a lift. Stairs to the beach are charming for a decade.
  • 💊 Check your prescriptions are available locally and what they cost.
  • 🌡️ Visit in the worst month, not the best one.
