The full story
The Mentawai islands lie a hundred and fifty kilometres off West Sumatra and receive more consistent quality swell than almost anywhere on the planet. Tuapejat, on Sipora, is the administrative capital of the group: a strung-out harbour town of government offices, boat charters and small shops, with breaks like Telescopes, HTs and Iceland within a short boat ride.
The property is an eighty-five square metre hardwood house on stilts over the shallows of Tuapejat harbour, reached by a short private walkway from the road. Two bedrooms with mosquito screens, two bathrooms, an open living deck facing the water where the boats come and go, and a lower platform for tying up a tender. Ironwood posts, a metal roof with an insulated lining, tanks for rainwater and a solar array with battery backup to cover the town supply's gaps.
Life here is genuinely remote and that is the appeal. There is a market, a district hospital, schools, fuel, mobile data and a handful of warungs; there is not a supermarket chain, a cinema or a bar strip. Provisions arrive on the ferry from Padang, which runs several times weekly, taking four hours by fast boat or overnight on the slower ships. Padang's Minangkabau airport connects to Jakarta and Kuala Lumpur.
Outside surfing, the islands hold rainforest, the Mentawai people's distinct culture and tattoo tradition, and reefs that see very little diving pressure. A house here suits someone who wants a base for a season rather than a weekend, or who intends to run a small charter or guiding operation — a common and workable arrangement locally with the right permits and Indonesian partner.
Title follows Indonesian rules: a long lease or Hak Pakai handled by a notary in Padang, with careful diligence on foreshore and customary land rights, which in the Mentawais matter more than the paperwork alone suggests.
