Ifaty lagoon beach bungalow

Ifaty sits twenty-odd kilometres north of Toliara on Madagascar's dry south-west coast, where the spiny forest of baobabs and octopus trees runs almost to the sea and a long barrier reef holds the lagoon flat and clear. It is one of the sunniest, driest places in the Indian Ocean — a Vezo fishing coast where the day starts with sails on the horizon and ends with the reef turning pink at sunset.

This is a two-bedroom, eighty-five square metre bungalow built the local way: coral-stone and render walls, a palm-thatch or corrugated roof over a timber frame, shuttered openings and a shaded verandah facing the lagoon forty metres away. One bathroom, a simple kitchen, solar panels with a battery bank for lighting and fans, a rainwater tank and a walled sand garden with a couple of tamarind trees for shade.

Ifaty village has small hotels, dive centres, a clinic and daily fish landings; the market town of Toliara, half an hour south on the RN9, has banks, a hospital, supermarkets, hardware and an airport (TLE) with flights to Antananarivo. Eating out is simple and cheap — grilled fish, octopus salad, rice and rougail at village tables for a couple of euros.

The lagoon is a snorkelling and kitesurfing playground: waist-deep turquoise water, coral bommies, and steady afternoon wind from about April to November. Beyond the reef, humpback whales pass between July and September and the fishing is superb. Inland, the Reniala spiny forest reserve protects baobabs several centuries old and radiated tortoises.

Buying works as it does elsewhere in Madagascar — foreigners use a Malagasy company structure or a long lease rather than freehold. On this coast, be particularly careful to verify boundaries and titles with a notaire, and understand that infrastructure is basic: expect solar power, tank water, and a caretaker to keep sand and salt at bay. The upside is a price that would not cover a garage in most beach markets, on a reef lagoon of genuine quality.
