Con Dao is unlike anywhere else in Vietnam. A sixteen-island archipelago two hundred kilometres off the southern coast, it is a national park and marine reserve that has been protected by its isolation for decades. The main island, Con Son, has a single small town, a dramatic coastline of empty beaches and granite headlands, and some of the best-preserved coral reefs in the country. The island's history adds a layer of depth. Con Dao was used as a prison by the French and later by the South Vietnamese government, and the old prisons and museums are now powerful historical sites. The forested interior has hiking trails leading to viewpoints, former colonial villas, and the graves of Vietnamese independence fighters. From July to October, protected beaches on the island are important nesting sites for green sea turtles and hawksbills, and visitors can watch the hatchlings make their way to the sea under ranger supervision.

Getting to Con Dao is easier than it once was. Con Dao Airport has daily flights from Ho Chi Minh City and Can Tho, and there are also ferries from Vung Tau and Soc Trang on the mainland. On the island, a scooter is the only transport you need.
